I get most of my traffic by joining message boards relevant to my topic and having my blog in my profile.

Also sometimes I post a link to my blog if I have written about something relevant to a topic on a message board.

Joining blogrings that fit your subject matter is another good way of getting visitors. There is an optimum number in a ring though - too few and not many will see you, too many and not many will get round to you.

Visit other blogs like yours and leave comments. Others who read the comments may want to visit you as well as the owner of the blog.

Make sure your blog is available to search engines. You may not always get hits that are relevant, but sometimes you get a chuckle from the keywords that find you - my favourite on my blog so far was "Frisbee injury to what part of neck causes death"

You can also join things like www.opinmind.com

This just a few ideas. What else do you do to attract people to your site?

I agree with your suggestions Jacquie. I would add, not to underestimate the appeal of photographs, and to post reasonably frequently.
Also make it easy for people to subscribe (see my post on FeedBurner in Visitor tracking).
I have also been working my way through this list which was on the blog of a member of the old forum called Donna I think. It is very interesting, it is where I got the FeedBurner idea from, I have also claimed my blog on technorati and am going to continue going through the suggestions, I have learned lots of interesting things at each step so far!
